Mutilate is an artist book and monograph by Belgian fashion designer Walter Van Beirendonck. Originally published in 1997, this first edition showcases over a decade of Van Beirendonck's audacious and innovative collections.
The book's pink cover, adorned with working zippers, features a mix of fold-out plates, die-cutting, embossing, photography, and graphics, with influences ranging from Godzilla to Orlan.
In the introduction, Van Beirendonck describes the project as a mental notebook: 'a playful and non-chronological collection of pictures, slogans, memories, ideas... a mixed bag of old and new material that I put in a big blender and shook thoroughly'. In fact, you could call it a kaleidoscope of images and words that mark(ed) my world. However, this book is also a fierce look forward, a big 'yes' to life, love and fashion; a vision that I always have been trying to sustain throughout these years.'
This spiral-bound book offers an immersive experience. From split personalities to provocative imagery, the book showcases the designer's inimitable style, even when plagiarized by Virgil Abloh, and his wild and lethal trash (WALT) aesthetic. Van Beirendonck's fascination with science fiction, spirituality, and the supernatural is palpable throughout.
As a member of the influential Antwerp Six and a graduate of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Van Beirendonck has made an indelible mark on the fashion industry. His irreverent approach, distinctive cuts, and strong graphics have garnered international acclaim.
For collectors and enthusiasts of Van Beirendonck's work, "Mutilate" is a must-have addition. This very good + copy with its pink cover and zipper fixtures captures the essence of the designer's bold and boundary-pushing creations.
