Westward Bound evolved from the cultural fusion of the city's punk explosion and the Soho underground clubland movements of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Referred to as "the dark side of the New Romantics," the brand gained recognition for its love for edgy parties.
The brand originated from the 1980s trail-blazing London based leather and latex fetish club, Der Putsch, founded in 1983 by Steve Beech. The images in the original flyers and membership card were courtesy of the late John Sutcliffe of AtomAge whose creations served as the foundation for Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren's Kings Road store, operating as Sex from 1974 to 1976 and later as Seditionaries.
In 1993, Westward Bound emerged, morphing concepts from Der Putsch. The brand, initially established as a Bed, Breakfast, and Dungeon facility, gained global attention and transitioned into latex couture. The retail store in Plymouth, established in 1995, expanded the brand's reach, focusing on latex clothing design. By 2013, the retail store and parties ceased as Westward Bound embraced online sales. With over 30 years in the fetish business, Westward Bound stands as a leading international designer and supplier of latex garments, embodying the ethos of desire-couture with a commitment to craftsmanship, quality, and originality.
