Shanghai-based photographer Luo Yang (born 1984 in the Liaoning Province in China’s northeast) graduated from the prestigious Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang in 2009. A graphic designer by education, she decided to pursue her interest in photography.
After numerous exhibitions in Asia and abroad, Luo is well-acclaimed internationally and has been featured by ARTE, ZDF Aspekte, Spiegel Onlin, Le Figaro International, and ID Magazine Her monograph GIRLS was published on occasion of the 10-year anniversary of her series in 2018.
A leading voice in the new wave of contemporary Chinese photography,Luo Yang is most famous for her snapshot-like images of teenagers, and more specifically for her ongoing series “Girls” depicting young Chinese women, exploring evolving concepts of femininity and identity.
Originating in 2007, the series gained international attention a decade later, when Moonduckling Films hosted a 10-year, multi-city retrospective of the project.
Following "Girls," Luo created "Youth," a collection featuring young Chinese individuals born in the late nineties and 2000s, representing a generation characterized by a cultural perspective deviating from mainstream Chinese culture.
Yang has since photographed male, genderfluid, and transgender adolescents in China, Hong Kong, and Thailand for her series “New Generation.” Although she’s aware of Western stereotypes of China and Eastern expectations and ideals of beauty and gender, Yang refuses to attach easy narratives to her photographs. Her cool, introspective subjects, pose for no one but themselves.
Luo Yang's work has been displayed in solo exhibitions in various international cities and has earned her awards such as the Jimei-Arles Female Photographers Award in 2019
