Luo Yang was born in 1994 in Liaoning, China, and currently lives in Beijing and Shanghai. She’s been focusing on women from different generations and backgrounds in contemporary China, depicting an emerging Chinese youth culture that defies imposed expectations and stereotypes.
Luo Yang studied graphic design at the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in China. Her 2019 series titled "Girls" showcases portraits of young women, reflecting evolving perspectives on femininity and identity in China.
After "Girls", Luo started working on the series "Youth," featuring people born in the late nineties and 2000s in China. This collection presents a more rebellious generation that is unapologetic of mainstream pop culture.
Solo shows in Paris, Berlin, Austria, Hong Kong and Bangkok have since contributed to her international recognition and she’s been widely covered by western media. She was selected as one of BBC’s “100 WOMEN” in 2018, shortlisted for C /O Berlin Talent Award in 2019, and a winner of Jimei · Arles women photographers award 2019.
