Lin Zhipeng is a key character in the new generation of Chinese photographers that have emerged in the past ten years. Born in Guangdong in 1979, he graduated from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies with a major in English. He got his'N° 223' alias from the name of the lovelorn cop in Wong Kar-Wai's Chungking Express, a sophisticated drama about longing and loneliness set against the high-key color of 1990s Hong Kong.
In 2003, Zhipeng started a blog North Latitude 23 where he published everyday pictures accompanied by short texts. His posts scored millions of views and made him famous. Zhipeng first gained popularity for his work through social media, other online platforms, and his independently published zines.
Against a conservative Chinese cultural backdrop, Lin's photographs serve as a collective diary of a generation striving to break free from societal pressures and explore the boundaries of their lives.
