One of the more controversial figures in contemporary Chinese photography, Li Xiang aka GuLu (°1983) who is actually a graduate in Film and Television Advertising of the Beijing Film Academy took up photography in 2008.
Beyond photography, he incorporates diverse artistic techniques such as text, handicrafts, and painting. Initially focusing on Chinese subcultures, Li Xiang has recently made it into his artistic mission to revive 'materialized' identities within society. In his solo exhibition, "Suddenly Retreating Desire" (Beijing, 2020), Li Xiang urged youth worldwide to reveal their 'true selves' before the camera. Central to his thematic exploration is the body, perceived as the embodiment of emotions.
Wildphotos is Gulu's latest project. The catalog was published on the occasion of an exhibition organized by Migrant Bird Space Berlin, and curated by Lu Mei. The book was printed by Gallery print and published by the Berlin branch of Migrant Bird Space because of subject matter censored by Chinese officials, and nudity.
The catalog contains nearly 300 Polaroid photos made between 2017 and 2021, representing a significant facet of his recent photographic work.
