The book was conceived as a double-face publication with inverted title pages and illustrations. It must be read and looked at from both sides. The text section has 40 pages thick, numbered T1-T39, and is located at the center. It is printed on cream-colored paper. The 5-page index is printed on glossy white paper showing full-color thumbnail images.
The book is a catalog to accompany the exhibition Chic Clicks: Creativity and Commerce in Contemporary Fashion Photography staged at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, from January 23 to May 5, 2002, and the Fotomuseum Winterthur, June 15 to August 18, 2002. The exhibition was curated by Ulrich Lehmann, fashion historian and author of Tigersprung, Fashion in Modernity.

'Fashion photography is a vampirism of representation,' Olivier Zahm writes in his contribution to the catalog, 'or representation in its vampiric form. It is an essentially impure and hybrid form of communication that assimilates, integrates, and fuses with all possible territories of reference, ruthlessly hijacking, recycling, and absorbing their characteristic signs in a manner not unlike what is called "sampling" in electronic music. The vampirism of fashion photography is the most powerful, up-to-the-minute version of the decomposed, destructured, fragmented state of representation today (deprived as it is of any stable referent).'
