Acquiring a cult status, this very collectible photography book, U.S.S.R | 1989 | C.C.C.P. [Homo Sovieticus], is the fascinating result of a project by Belgian photographer Carl de Keyzer (born 1958). De Keyzer has documented the gradual disappearance of the 'Homo Sovieticus' against the backdrop of Mikhail Gorbachev's reforms in the Soviet Union at the time he traveled through the former USSR between August 1988 and August 1989.

Carl de Keyzer, born in Kortrijk, Belgium in 1958, studied film and video before establishing as a freelancer in the late 1980s. De Keyzer has taught photography at the Royal Academy of Art in Ghent and co-founded the XYZ-Photography Gallery. He became a member of Magnum Photos in 1994, where he has explored various subjects, including "God Inc.," that focuses on religious life in America. De Keyzer's work has been recognized with awards such as the Eugene Smith Award in 1990. He has contributed to publications like The New York Times and undertaken commercial assignments for clients such as Coca-Cola and Ernst & Young.
