In Staged Confusion, Bernd and Hilla Becker student Boris Becker tries to show the interplay between control and disorder in modern spaces. Becker’s large-format photographs depict construction sites, excavation zones, interiors, and roofscapes, including series from Aleppo, that blur the line between architectural documentation and abstract composition.
Through precise framing and a tension between structural rhythm and visual entropy, Becker transforms urban disarray into meditative visual systems. The volume features essays and curatorial notes that situate the work within Becker’s broader practice of exploring human attempts to impose order upon complexity.
Boris Becker and the Düsseldorf School of Photography
Boris Becker (b. 1961, Cologne) studied under Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, emerging as one of the defining figures of the Düsseldorfer Schule. His practice examines the architecture of infrastructure, bunkers, bridges, housing estates, and industrial remains, through a typological lens.
With Staged Confusion, Becker extends this inquiry into the unstable borders of order and accident, combining documentary precision with conceptual awareness. His work has been exhibited internationally and is represented in major European museum collections.
