The first Russian Art Exhibition in Berlin was actually meant to raise funds for Russians and Ukrainians starving from hunger in the southern parts of the country. In the Summer of 1921, Lenin had instructed the German communist Willi Münzenberg to reorganize several proletarian actions against the famine into one international organization.
